The Guajira peninsula tour in a few words:

First, departure from Bogota (or from another destination) and flight to Riohacha. Then will begin a 4X4 car journey across the Guajira Peninsula, to discover natural and cultural sites including sand dunes, oases, beaches, salt flats, communities and bird sanctuaries.

 

Key itinerary destinations:

Bogota -> Riohacha -> Cabo de la Vela -> Nazareth -> Punta Gallinas -> Riohacha -> Bogota

 

Highlights of this tour:

First of all, you will visit Cabo de la Vela, a seaside kitesurfing spot, and its surrounding natural sites. Then, you will take the dirt roads of the desert to reach several destinations located at the tip of the peninsula. Visit to the Macuira National Park, the Taroa Dunes and Punta Gallinas, the northernmost point of the continent. this tour will end with Bahia Hondita, a flamingo sanctuary, and the salt fields of Manaure, before returning to Riohacha.

 

Visiting season:

All year round. Though it is recommended to travel to the Guajira peninsula during dry season, December to March or June to September. For more information on the visiting season in this region, click here.

 

Physical condition:

This is a Safari-type car tour through a desert on dirt tracks. The road journeys have a considerable duration (up to 7 or 8 hours on some days). It is also important to take into account the high temperatures (25 to 40°), as well as the basic comfort and limited water or electricity supply.

Day 1, Riohacha – Cabo de la Vela

You will fly to Rioacha, the main city in the Guajira Peninsula. Upon arrival, a transport will pick you up and take you to Cabo de la Vela, a town on the desertic coast of the guajira peninsula located 3 hours away. Your driver will show you the Pilon de Azucar. On top of this rocky mound, you will observe Playa Arco Iris (Rainbow beach), one of the most famous landscape in peninsula. You will then admire the first sunset of your trip in the guajira before heading back to your hotel.

Day 2, Macuira National Park
Early in the morning, you will head toward the town of Nazareth, in the Macuira National Parc. On your way up to this mountainous area, you will drive across the unforgiving desert of the Guajira peninsula. Nazareth is a sacred place where legendary dunes have formed right next to a water stream surrounded by a lush vegetation.

Day 3, Taroa and Punta Gallinas

The dunes of Taroa are located right on the shore of the Caribbean Sea, an unmatched view anywhere in Colombia. After a quick swim and a stop on arguably the most beautiful spot in the peninsula, you will head toward the Punta Gallinas Lighthouse, the northernmost tip of the south American continent. You will then admire one of the most marvelous sunsets in all of Colombia.

Day 4, Bahia Hondita – Punta Agujas

In the morning, a boat trip from Bahia Hondita will lead you to Punta Agujas, where you will see some of the most iconic landscapes of the Guajira peninsula. On your way you might able to watch pink flamingos in their natural habitat. After this visit, you will head back to Riohacha where you will spend the night. The day after, you will fly back to Bogota.

Days 5, Back to Bogota

A car will meet you at your hotel in order to take you to Riohacha’s airport. You will then board a flight bound for Bogota or continue your journey toward another part of Colombia.
