With a population approaching 50 million, Colombia is the 3rd most populated country in Latin America, after Brazil and Mexico. This huge population is divided into 4 distinct groups: Caucasians, Africans, Amerindians, and Mixed Race. This makes Colombia one of the most diversely populated countries in the world. Colombia has an area of 1,141,748 square kilometres, making it the 25th biggest country in the world, however, vast swathes, like the Amazon, are uninhabited. Most of Colombia’s population is in the Andes and on the Caribbean Coast and more than 70% are urban. The main cities are Bogota (8 million), Medellin (3.7), Cali (3.2), Barranquilla (2.2) and Cartagena (1.5).

Worldwide, Colombia is the second most diverse country in terms of fauna. The country has more than 400 species of mammals, 755 species of amphibians and more than 1800 species of birds representing 20% of the species in the world, more than Europe and North America put together, in other words, the country has the most varied bird population in the world. This diversity is due to the variety of ecosystems and climates that we find in Colombia, from the Pacific coast to the Amazon and the Andes to the Caribbean. Moreover, 50% of the country is composed of national parks, Colombia offers a great choice in terms of hikes and treks, and besides, most of our tours can include hikes around the different regions of Colombia that will show you those animal species.

Located at the north of the continent of South America, Colombia enjoys a tropical climate in most of its regions. Temperatures can change depending on different geographical and geological factors. For example, the Caribbean coast has a warm and humid climate whereas the Andes, in the center of the country, has a dry, fresh, mountain climate.

Due to its proximity with the Equator line, the temperatures in Colombia do not change much from January to December. However, the temperature can drop at night in places of altitude. Bogota, located at 2600 meters of altitude, has an average yearly temperature of 14 degrees Celsius. Cartagena, on the Atlantic coast, has a warmer and more humid climate. In this city, just like in any part of the country, the thermometer shows almost the same temperature all year long, from 25° to 30° and a humidity around 90%. The regions of Colombia show different landscapes, from the Amazon rainforest or the Andean snow-covered peaks, to the desert plains of the Guajira peninsula on the Caribbean coast.

 

Best seasons to visit Colombia

 

There are only 2 seasons in Colombia: Winter (rainy season), from April till May and from October to November, and Summer (dry season), starting December until the end of January and during the months of July and August. The rainfall can vary depending on the region; the Pacific coast is rainier than the Andes and the rainy seasons are different again in the Amazon compared to the Guajira peninsula. That is why, depending on the region visited, one can visit Colombia at any season of the year and enjoy a warm and dry climate.
