20 Feb Guatapé and El Peñol Rock
Rendezvous in this small town of Antioquia, in the land of magical realism.
During your stay in Medellin, after having visited the city of eternal spring, a discovery of the splendid Antioquia department is a must. An excellent option for a trip to the countryside is a visit to Guatapé, a flagship village on the outskirts of Medellin. On the road to Guatapé you will find the famous Peñol Rock, the main attraction in the area. Along the way, you can see this unusual boulder that seems to spring out of the green hills. The rock is located a few kilometres before Guatapé, so it is best to stop there first before heading to the village.
Guatapé, a most colourful village.
The most beautiful view in the world
The Peñol rock is about 10 minutes by Tuk Tuk from the village. There, a sign announcing the most beautiful view in the world stands at the entrance. Of course, this kind of claim is rather subject to argumentation. But, if there was a contest of the most beautiful views in the world, this one would have a chance. However, it is not free to enjoy this grandiose landscape. One must pay not only financially speaking (the sum of 20,000 pesos, about $5), but also physically speaking, with sweat. Indeed, there is no lift at the rock and the access to “the most beautiful view in the world” is via a staircase. Once you have climbed the 700 or so steps leading to the top, a circular terrace allows you to enjoy a breath-taking 360° view on the Lake of Guatapé, stretching all around you.
If you are interested by a stay in Medellin, a visit to Guatapé and its surroundings, or in any other region of Colombia
